Objectives

To sell by competitive bids, merchant ships which become surplus to the needs of the Government.

Sale, Exchange, or Donation of Property and Goods.

 

Uses and Use Restrictions

Special uses such as for artificial fish reefs or for dismantling purposes. Restrictions preclude use of ships for transporting cargo or passengers.

Applicant Eligibility

Those who have a need for ships for dismantling purposes may purchase ships under competitive bids. States may be conveyed ships for sinking as artificial fish reefs.

Those who have a need for ships for dismantling purposes or for sinking as artificial fish reefs.

Affidavits of citizenship, statements of operating, and financial capabilities.

Program Accomplishments

Twelve ships were sold for scrapping in fiscal year 2001. One ship was donated to States for sinking as artificial fish reefs. Five ships are expected to be sold for scrapping, three ships are expected to be sold under special legislation for operation, and it is anticipated that one vessel will be donated to a State for sinking as artificial fish reef in fiscal year 2001.
