Vegetation Plot Data Harvest and Analysis in Support of the U.S. National Vegetation Classification

This project will enhance the content of the USNVC Standard through an in-depth analysis of a comprehensive database of Longleaf pine woodland plot data and will enrich the USNVC Vegetation Plot archive (Vegbank) with that plot data. With approximately 3 percent of the originally extensive (90 million acres) system still intact, the longleaf pine ecosystem is a major focus of conservation efforts throughout the Southeastern U.S. A comprehensive understanding of the plant communities represented by these woodlands is essential for effective management and conservation. This project will provide a review and revision of the USNVC Standard at the Alliance and Association level for Longleaf Pine Woodlands of the Carolinas, Georgia, and Florida. This work will result in a formal proposal of revisions to be considered by the Ecological Society of Americaâ₏™s Vegetation Panel, the scientific advisory group charged by the FGDC Vegetation Subcommittee to guide the revision process.
