Cooperative Ecosystem Studies Unit, Great Lakes Northern Forests CESU

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Great Lakes Science Center (GLSC) is offering a funding opportunity to a CESU partner for research to support refinement of collection and processing of zooplankton, lower trophic foodweb analyses, and fish diet analyses for Great Lakes species with an emphasis on the Huron-Erie corridor (HEC) and western Lake Erie foodwebs. Recent investment in restoring functional aquatic habitat in the HEC has brought renewed interest in assessing the role that the HEC fills in contributing to fisheries production and water quality in the central Great Lakes. Extensive annual monitoring of fish spawning and larval fish production has shown marked changes over historic patterns with widespread reproduction occurring for several economically and ecological valued fish species. Such monitoring facilitates management of this unique connecting channel corridor and information gleaned from these studies helps direct management strategies toward continued restoration of ecosystem services.
