Cooperative Ecosystem Studies Unit, Colorado Plateau CESU

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Western Geographic Science Center (WGSC) is offering a funding opportunity to a CESU partner for research to support mapping baseline mudflat extent in the SBSPRP study area, and 5-year changes to the baseline. A second objective will be to map the Net Primary Productivity (Biomass/NPP) of mudflat biofilm using multispectral data to explore food resources for waterbirds. In support of this project, the CESU partner will focus on development of image processing methods that utilize the coastal blue band on the WorldView2/3 sensor to overcome issues with mapping mud flats in shallow water. The proposed research will provide USGS monitoring/research teams the ability to develop methods for mapping mudflats that will meet requirements of the SBSPRP Adaptive Management Plan. Ultimately a partner who 1) possesses a strong working knowledge of automated mapping methods for coastal environments, and 2) a working understanding of the application of satellite imagery for mapping mudflats.
