To distribute cataloging data files and related technical publications to government agencies, libraries and other institutions and individuals. This enables them to utilize Library of Congress cataloging and national standards to avoid costly cataloging in their own institutions.

In fiscal year 2002, the Cataloging Distribution Service sold 2,914 annual catalog subscriptions, 22,661 technical publications, and 207 annual subscriptions for MARC (Machine Readable Cataloging) data files, 4,442 CD-ROM subscriptions, and 3,063 subscripsions for Web-based services.
